Concert cimbalomist Richard Grimes specializes in contemporary orchestral and chamber repertoire for the instrument. Since 1999 Mr. Grimes has performed extensively throughout North America with Symphony Orchestras (cwww.concertcimbalom.com) and with Cordis, a critically acclaimed contemporary chamber ensemble in which he plays both traditional and electric concert cimbalom (www.cordismusic.com). In 2001, Mr. Grimes was invited to give a concert and workshop on the cimbalom at the prestigious Performing Arts Society International Conference in Louisville, KY.
Mr. Grimes is a prominent composer for the cimbalom, having written the entire catalogue of repertoire for Cordis, several pieces of solo cimbalom literature, and two method books for the cimbalom (Bachovich Press). In addition to writing repertoire for the instrument, Mr. Grimes has also authored the book Gypsy Son: The Evolution of the Concert Cimbalom, which chronicles the divergent paths of the classical and gypsy concert cimbalom performance practices throughout the 20th Century. Mr. Grimes currently serves as the Executive Director of the American Concert Cimbalom Festival held in Boston each summer (www.cimbalomfestival.com).
