I finally had time over the weekend to catch up with Robert Flanagan’s report on orchestra finances, commissioned by the Mellon Foundation. It’s a comic masterpiece— a hilarious parody of those diagnoses of dire orchestral health that appear like 17-year cicadas….No, actually, it’s supposed to be serious. But the report is a bit of a familiar mess. I’m beginning to think that when economists take a look at the performing arts, especially economists who don’t have any experience in that sector, on some level, it fries their brain.
