Velleda Miragias, Cello
A native of Paris, Velléda C. Pelpel-Miragias was admitted to Paris Conservatoire Régional Supérieur (CNR) where she then won first prizes in both cello and chamber music with Honors from “Conservatoire National de Region de Boulogne”. Velléda also graduated from Indiana University with a performance diploma and then obtained her Master’s of Music at Boston University on a full tuition scholarship. She won the international “Prix de la ville d’Epernay” and received the ministry of culture award from France. Velléda has participated in Master Classes with Anner Bylsma, Isaac Stern, Janos Starker, Gyorgy Sebök and Natalia Gutman. Velléda has performed at festivals such as the “Cello International Festival” in France, the “Académie Européenne de Musique” in Aix-en-Provence, and has performed in fringe recitals at the Boston Early Music Festival. Velleda performs internationally with pianist Mika Tanaka as “Duo Terre de Sienne”. She is principal assistant at the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, and also plays with Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston and Boston Ballet. She plays on a period instrument with Handel and Haydn Society as well as Boston Baroque.
Velleda Miragias coaches Boston Youth Philharmonic Orchestra as well as Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra.
She was conductor of the Orchestral Classical Ensemble in Belmont Waldorf High school MA for 3 years in 2005. In addition, Velléda co-founded Artisan Music Studios (www.artisanmusic.com) with her husband Gus in 2001 and opened the Artisan Childcare Center in 2009, a music immersion childcare program.(http://www.artisanchildcarecenter.com/)
Mika Tanaka, Piano
A native of Tokyo, pianist Mika Tanaka has performed extensively in solo and chamber music concerts throughout the US, France, England, and Japan, including Boston‘s Symphony Hall and Suntory Hall in Tokyo. Mika currently freelances throughout the greater Boston, New York areas and Tokyo. She performs varied concerts of classical music, contemporary works, included her own compositions. She is the pianist for “Duo Voix Claire”, a flute/piano duo and “Duo Terre de sienne”, a cello/piano duo.
Festival appearances include Academie Internationale de Musique de Biarritz (France), Warebrook Contemporary Music Festival(US), Kiyosato International Music Festival(Japan), and Stamford International Music Festival (UK) where she is a pianist in residence.
She is the third prize winner of International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition in 2008.
Mika earned her Bachelor of Music degree in piano art performance from Tokyo College of Music and received her Master‘s Degree from Conservatoire Européen de Musique de Paris with the highest honor “l‘unanimité du jury”. Her principal teachers include Théodore Paraskivesco, Wayman Chin, Seizo Azuma, Katsuko Miura.
